Have you ever had to do a accounting audit? That's what I spent most of today doing. I must say it's absolutely NO FUN! Accounting and reconciling the books are definitely my least favorite thing to do but it's one of those things we must do. Today I was actually doing a different type of audit and that was to audit a ton of information on my website. A bit hard to explain so I'll leave that type of audit explanation for another day.
But along the same topic comes record keeping. Keeping good records is an absolute must in any business. As much as I hate accounting I know if I don't do it or do it half heartedly that my business will suffer for it. Especially around tax time.
As much as I love computers and all the things they can do. When it comes to accounting I prefer the old fashion way of doing it...with a good old pen and paper. Well, a calculator too seeing that I wasn't born a mathematical genius. You might also be surprised that all of my expense receipts are stuffed in dated manila envelopes.
Basically what I try to do to keep up with the sometimes daunting task of record keeping is to reconcile my expenses at the end of each month and write the totals on the outside of each manila envelope. This way when it comes time to do the taxes I'll have those totals handy.
